How much raw food should I feed my dog? A simple guide from raw treat pet food

Feeding a raw diet doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. When you keep things clear and practical, working out how much to feed becomes straightforward and correct portion sizes are the foundation of a balanced, healthy approach to raw feeding.

Below is a simple guide to help you calculate portions, whether you are feeding a fast growing puppy or an active adult dog.

How Much Should Adult Dogs Eat?

Feed 2% to 3% of your dog’s ideal adult bodyweight per day

General Feeding Guidelines

Ideal Weight

20KG

25KG

2% 100G 200G 300G 400G 500G
3% 150G 300G 450G 600G 750G

For example:

  • A 20kg dog will usually require 400g to 600g daily
  • A 30kg dog will typically need 600g to 900g daily

You can divide this into one or two meals, depending on what works best for your routine.

Remember, every dog is different. Monitor their body condition and adjust portions as needed, serving more if underweight and serving less if overweight. Raw feeding is flexible and easy to adapt.

How Much Should Puppies Eat?

Puppies grow quickly, so they need more food proportionate to their size than adult dogs

8 to 12 Weeks: Feed 8–10% of current bodyweight per day, in 3–4 meals. Tiny, active, and growing fast.

3 to 6 Months: Feed 6–8% per day, in 3 meals. Growth is rapid, so steady fuel is needed.

6 to 12 Months: Feed 4–6% per day, usually in 2 meals. Growth slows, portions reduce.

12+ Months (up to 18 months for large breeds): Transition to adult guideline of 2–3% of ideal bodyweight. Larger breeds may stay on higher amounts longer.

How Much Should Working Dogs Eat?

Dogs with high activity levels often require additional calories

In many cases, they can be fed:

Up to 4% of bodyweight per day, depending on workload, physical condition, and even seasonal changes.

A well balanced raw diet consisting of meat, bone, and offal can provide sustained energy without unnecessary additives.

  • 1

    Base portions on ideal bodyweight

  • 2

Introduce changes gradually and monitor condition closely

  • 3

Always provide access to fresh drinking water

  • 4

    Introduce new protein sources slowly

Once you understand your dog’s individual needs, portioning becomes second nature. Whether you are new to raw feeding or simply refining your routine, these guidelines will help support your dog’s overall health and condition.
